0Me contaron este cuento que nos puede ayudar a reflexionar sobre nuestras actitudes para llegar a tener éxito:
«Hubo una vez un emperador que convocó a todos los solteros del reino, pues era tiempo de buscar pareja a su hija.
Todos los jóvenes asistieron, y el rey les dijo: “Os voy a dar una semilla diferente a cada uno de vosotros. Al cabo de seis meses deberéis traerme en una maceta la planta que haya crecido, y la más bella ganará la mano de mi hija, y por ende el reino”.
Así se hizo. Había un joven que plantó su semilla, y en vano esperó a que la planta brotara. Mientras tanto, todos los demás jóvenes del reino no paraban de hablar y mostrar las hermosas plantas y flores que habían sembrado en sus macetas. Cuando pasaron los seis meses, todos los jóvenes desfilaron hacia el castillo con hermosísimas y exóticas plantas.
El joven estaba muy triste, pues su semilla nunca germinó; ni siquiera quería ir al palacio, pero su madre insistía en que debía ir. Con la cabeza baja, y muy avergonzado, desfiló el último con su maceta vacía.
Todos los jóvenes hablaban de sus plantas, y al ver a nuestro amigo, se rieron y se burlaron de él. En ese momento, el alboroto fue interrumpido por la entrada del rey. Todos hicieron una reverencia mientras el rey se paseaba entre las macetas, admirando las plantas.
Finalizada la inspección, hizo llamar a su hija. Convocó, de entre todos, al joven que llevó su maceta vacía. Los pretendientes se quedaron atónitos.
El rey dijo entonces: “Este es el nuevo heredero del trono, y se casará con mi hija. Os di una semilla infértil, y habéis tratado de engañarme plantando otras plantas. Este joven tuvo el valor de presentarse y mostrar su maceta vacía, siendo sincero, realista y valiente, cualidades que un futuro rey debe tener”».
Reflexión:
1. Pregúntate qué hubieras hecho. Cuál hubiera sido tu comportamiento sino hubiera crecido la semilla. Considera que tus logros profesionales dependiesen de que tu semilla germinara.
2. Realiza la misma reflexión pensando que compites con alguien. La maceta tiene la semilla sin germinar. Ahora debes defender el resultado ante tu jefe. ¿Qué pensarías de ti mismo?
3. Has plantado otra semilla porque la que te habían dado no brotaba. La semilla impostora ha crecido y tiene una flor inmensa. ¿Guardarás tu secreto y la defenderás como la correcta?
4. Quizá has agotado tu paciencia al cabo de unos días, y has tirado la maceta y la semilla, creyendo que no merecía la pena tanto esfuerzo. ¿Atacas así tus tareas profesionales que exigen esfuerzo?
Ser sincero, realista y valiente son las características para ser un buen profesional, excelente persona y muchas cosas más. Posiblemente, para ser exitosos sólo precisemos aceptar lo que somos y ejercerlo ante cualquier situación.
I was told a story that I believe will help us to reflect on the right mindset for success:
“Once upon a time, there was an emperor who summoned all the young single men in the land because it was time to find a husband for his daughter.
All of the young men in the kingdom came and the emperor said to them “I am going to give each of you a different seed. After six months, you must bring back the plant I have given you in a flowerpot and the one with the most beautiful plant will win my daughter’s hand in marriage and, therefore, my kingdom”.
And so it was. There was a young man who planted his seed and waited in vain for the plant to bud. Meanwhile, all the other young men in the kingdom talked incessantly about the beautiful plants and flowers they had grown in their flowerpots. At the end of six months, all of the young men headed to the castle with their beautiful, exotic plants.
The young man was very sad because his seed had not germinated; he didn’t even want to go to the castle but his mother insisted. With his head hanging low, and very ashamed, he was the last to join the queue with his empty flowerpot.
All the young men were chattering about their plants and, on seeing our friend, they laughed and made fun of him. Just then, the commotion was interrupted by the entrance of the king. They all bowed as the king walked between the flowerpots, admiring the plants.
When the inspection was over, he called for his daughter to join him. From among all the men, he summoned the young man with the empty flowerpot to him. The other suitors were amazed.
And then the emperor said: «This is the new heir to the throne, and he will marry my daughter. I gave each of you an infertile seed and you have tried to deceive me by planting other plants. This young man had the courage to present himself and to show his empty flowerpot, and is thus sincere, realistic and brave, qualities that a future king should possess».
Reflection:
1. Ask yourself what you would have done. How would you have acted if your seed had not grown? Imagine that your professional achievements depend on your seed germinating.
2. Now think about it again, but imagine you are competing with someone. Your flowerpot contains the seed that has not grown. You now have to defend the result before your boss. What would you think about yourself?
3. You planted another seed because the one you were given did not bud. The impostor seed has grown into an enormous flower. Would you keep your secret and defend it like the truth?
4. Maybe you lost your patience after a few days and threw away the flowerpot and the seed, thinking that it was not worth the effort. Is that how you tackle the professional tasks that require effort?
Sincerity, realism and courage are the traits of a good professional, excellent person and many other things. Perhaps the secret to success is simply to accept how we are and to behave in that way in any situation.
