Gracias.
“When I was young, my strong, impulsive and volatile nature would make me lose my temper at the slightest provocation. Most of the time, after one of these outbursts, I would feel ashamed and try to console the person I had hurt.
One day my teacher, after watching me apologise to a classmate for losing my temper, took me to a classroom, gave me a smooth piece of paper and said «crumple it». Amazed, I did what he said. I crumpled it up and made a ball with the paper. Then the teacher said “Now put it back the way it was”. Of course I was unable to do this. No matter how hard I tried, the paper was still full of wrinkles and creases. Then the teacher said, “People’s hearts are like that piece of paper. The impression you leave on them will be as difficult to eliminate as the wrinkles and creases you have made on that paper”.
And that is how I learned to be more understanding and patient. When I feel like losing my temper, I remember that wrinkled piece of paper. I understand that the impression we leave on others is impossible to eliminate, especially when we hurt people with our reactions or our words.”
Exercise:
  1. Do we leave any mark when the action is positive?
  1. If the answer is yes, what test could we do to show that positive actions leave a permanent impression?
  1. Recall a very negative act in your life and ask yourself if you have left a mark on the other person’s heart, and on your own.
  1. Remember the best thing that has happened in your life and ask yourself if you have left a mark on the other person’s heart, and on your own.
  1. Study your personal history and decide which action weighs more than the other.
  1. Decide what mark you want to leave today on the people around you and on yourself.
This exercise makes us think deeply about our actions. Today, let’s try to treat everyone around us and those who cross our path with courtesy and respect.
And when we have learnt our lesson, we will continue to keep the paper smooth day after day.
Thank you.
